Learning LMMS — A Day I Left My Guitar on the Stand

I usually make music with a guitar in my hands.


When I record guitar, I’m constantly listening to timing in a very physical way:

  • how a note sits against the grid,

  • whether the phrase is pushing or pulling,

  • how long a note should ring, and exactly where the ending of the note should land.

Even small differences in touch, length, and release can change the whole feeling of a performance.


For this project, I left my guitar on the stand and spent a day learning LMMS.

The goal was not to make a polished commercial release. I wanted to understand the basic LMMS workflow by actually making a short piece of music from scratch. I built a small lo-fi / game-audio inspired groove at 85 BPM, using a simple structure: intro, main groove, variation, reduced section, and ending.


The first thing that felt different was the relationship to time.

Instead of playing a phrase and shaping the timing by feel, I was filling boxes in a 16-step grid. Kick, snare, closed hi-hat, and open hi-hat were placed directly into the Beat+Bassline Editor. Everything started from a very clear, almost mechanical structure: sixteenth-note steps, repeated patterns, and small variations.

That was a different mindset from recording guitar.


With guitar, I often think about how a phrase breathes around the grid. In LMMS, the grid itself became the starting point. The musical question became: how can I create movement, groove, and variation inside something that begins so locked-in?


I built the drums first, then added a bassline, pad progression, and lead melody using LMMS’s built-in TripleOscillator. The bass and lead parts were written in the Piano Roll. The lead melody repeated across the track, but I edited each repetition slightly so the piece would feel less like a static loop.


I also added velocity changes to make the MIDI feel a little less mechanical. It still wasn’t “performance” in the same way as guitar, but it reminded me that even inside a grid-based workflow, there are many small decisions that affect feel.

Another difference was tone shaping.


When I record guitar, I often use EQ heavily. A lot of the work happens after the performance: removing harshness, controlling low end, shaping midrange, and making the recorded tone sit in the mix.


In LMMS, I found myself thinking less about EQ at first and more about sound selection and synthesis. The tone was shaped earlier in the process: choosing the instrument, adjusting the oscillator sound, editing the envelope, and deciding how the note should begin and end.

One useful issue I ran into was clicking at the end of MIDI notes. The sound was cutting off too abruptly, creating small pops. I fixed it by editing the volume envelope and adding a small amount of attack and release. That was a good reminder that even simple synth sounds need proper shaping. The note ending matters in MIDI too — just in a different way than guitar.


I also explored LMMS’s FX Mixer, routing drums, bass, pad, and lead to separate channels. I kept the drums and bass mostly dry, added reverb to the pad, and used delay on the lead. Later, I added a warp-style sound effect using the Sample Track to mark the intro and ending transitions.


One of the most interesting parts was LMMS’s automation and LFO workflow.

I used automation to fade out the pad during the ending. I also used an LFO Controller from the Controller Rack to add subtle stereo movement to the lead pan. Compared to larger DAWs, LMMS felt very visual in this area. Automation clips are easy to see in the Song Editor, and the Controller Rack makes it clear which parameter is being moved by the LFO.

By the end of the session, the piece was still simple, but it had become a complete miniature track rather than just a loop.


This project helped me understand several parts of the LMMS workflow:

  • Beat+Bassline Editor for step-sequenced drums

  • Piano Roll for bass, pad, and lead MIDI parts

  • TripleOscillator for basic synthesis

  • Envelope editing to remove note-end clicks

  • FX Mixer routing and effects

  • Automation for fade-out movement

  • Controller Rack / LFO for parameter modulation

  • Sample Track for audio effects and transitions

  • Song Editor for arranging the full structure


The biggest lesson was not just technical. It was the shift in musical thinking.

As a guitarist, I usually start from touch, timing, and tone in the body. In LMMS, I started from boxes, patterns, oscillators, and automation curves. It was a different way of arriving at music.


I don’t think one approach replaces the other. Instead, this small project reminded me that every tool teaches a different kind of listening.


While I was working on LMMS, the guitar stayed on the stand.

But the same questions were still there:  Where does the note sit?  How does it move?  How does it end?  And what makes a simple pattern feel alive? The Sound I created is on Patreon @yewplaysmusic
